Northland (National Provincial Championship)
The Northland Rugby Football Union (NRFU) is the governing body for rugby union in the Northland region of New Zealand. The Northland representative rugby team, nicknamed the Taniwha, competes in the National Provincial Championship (NPC), New Zealand's premier domestic rugby competition.
The NRFU was founded in 1920. The Northland team represents the region encompassing the Far North District, Kaipara District, and Whangarei District. Their home ground is Semenoff Stadium (formerly Okara Park) in Whangarei.
Northland's NPC history includes periods of success and challenges. They have won the NPC second division title on several occasions, allowing them to participate in the premiership division. The team's colors are sky blue, navy blue, and white.
The Northland region has produced numerous notable All Blacks, including players who have made significant contributions to New Zealand rugby. The NRFU also focuses on developing rugby at the grassroots level, promoting the sport within schools and clubs throughout the Northland region. The Taniwha are known for their passionate supporters and the unique culture they bring to the NPC competition.
