Lake Moore (New South Wales)
Lake Moore is an ephemeral salt lake located in the Riverina region of New South Wales, Australia. It is situated approximately 50 kilometers north of Griffith and 20 kilometers west of Rankins Springs. The lake is part of the Lachlan River catchment area, though it rarely receives direct inflows from the river.
Lake Moore typically fills during periods of significant rainfall and flooding within its catchment. Due to its shallow nature and high evaporation rate, the lake is often dry or contains only shallow pools of saline water.
The surrounding area is primarily agricultural, with sheep and wheat farming being the dominant land uses. The lakebed itself is characterized by salt flats and sparse vegetation adapted to saline conditions.
While not a major tourist destination, Lake Moore plays a role in local ecosystems, supporting migratory birds and other wildlife when water is present. It is also of interest to researchers studying salt lake environments and hydrology.
