Alfred Harding (bishop)
Alfred Harding (1852 – 1923) was an American missionary bishop of the Episcopal Church.
Born in County Donegal, Ireland, Harding was ordained to the priesthood in 1885. He served as a missionary in various locations, including Minnesota and Massachusetts, before being consecrated as the second Missionary Bishop of the District of Washington in 1909. He succeeded Henry Yates Satterlee in this role.
As Bishop of Washington, Harding oversaw the ongoing construction of the Washington National Cathedral and actively engaged in the social and religious life of the District of Columbia. He was a strong advocate for education and social justice. He served in this position until his death in 1923. His episcopate was marked by growth in the diocese and continued fundraising and building efforts for the Cathedral.
