Sauron (comics)

Sauron is the alias of Karl Lykos, a fictional supervillain appearing in American comic books published by Marvel Comics, primarily as an adversary of the X-Men.

Lykos was a brilliant but amoral scientist who, while working in the Savage Land, was bitten by a mutated pteranodon. This bite triggered a dormant mutant gene within him, granting him the ability to drain the life force of other living beings, including mutants. This process transforms him into Sauron, a humanoid pterodactyl-like creature.

As Sauron, Lykos gains increased strength, stamina, and durability, as well as the ability to fly, breathe fire, and hypnotize others with his gaze. He is also capable of regenerating from injuries and can absorb the memories and abilities of those whose life force he drains. His personality shifts radically as Sauron, becoming more primal and savage.

Sauron's primary goal is to transform the entire world into a "Savage Land" of dinosaurs and other prehistoric creatures, under his rule. He has frequently clashed with the X-Men, who have consistently thwarted his plans. He has also had encounters with other Marvel heroes.

Sauron is considered a dangerous and formidable opponent due to his powers and cunning. He is often portrayed as a tragic figure, a brilliant scientist trapped within the body of a monstrous creature he cannot control. His vulnerability stems from his reliance on draining life force, which creates a constant need for victims. Over time, some writers have explored Lykos's internal struggle against the Sauron persona, hinting at a desire to be cured of his condition.
