2006 New Year Honours (New Zealand)

The 2006 New Year Honours in New Zealand were appointments by Elizabeth II in her right as Queen of New Zealand to various orders and honours to reward and highlight good works by citizens of that country, and were announced on 31 December 2005.

The honours system in New Zealand at this time comprised the following orders:

  • The Order of New Zealand (ONZ)
  • The New Zealand Order of Merit (NZOM)
  • The Queen's Service Order (QSO)
  • The Queen's Service Medal (QSM)

In the 2006 New Year Honours, appointments were made to all of these orders. The recipients of honours are typically individuals who have made significant contributions in their respective fields, including public service, community work, the arts, sciences, business, and sports. The honours recognise both long-term dedication and exceptional achievements.

Categories of the New Zealand Order of Merit include Principal Companion (PCNZM), Distinguished Companion (DCNZM), Companion (CNZM), Officer (ONZM) and Member (MNZM). The honours list included individuals recognised at all levels within these orders.

The Queen's Service Order and Queen's Service Medal recognise valuable voluntary service to the community or meritorious and faithful services to the Crown.

The full list of recipients, along with citations detailing their contributions, was published in the New Zealand Gazette.
