The Spire

A spire is a tapering structure, most often used as a terminal feature of a building, particularly churches and cathedrals. Spires are typically polygonal or circular in plan and rise to a point, distinguished from towers by their continuous decrease in width across their height.

Spires serve both aesthetic and symbolic functions. Aesthetically, they enhance the visual drama and verticality of a building, drawing the eye upward. Symbolically, spires often represent aspiration towards the heavens and spiritual transcendence.

Spires can be constructed from a variety of materials, including stone, brick, wood, and metal. They may be integral to the building's main structure or added as a separate element. The architectural style of a spire often reflects the overall style of the building it adorns, with notable examples found in Gothic, Romanesque, and Baroque architecture. Variations include broach spires (where the transition from the tower to the spire is achieved with sloping sections) and needle spires (slender, pointed spires). The height of a spire can vary significantly, sometimes exceeding the height of the building to which it is attached.
