Nathan Webb (judge)
Nathan Webb (1825-1902) was a United States District Judge of the United States District Court for the District of Maine.
Biography
Born in Portland, Maine, on January 8, 1825, Webb attended Bowdoin College and read law. He was admitted to the bar in 1846 and entered private practice in Portland. He served as the United States Attorney for the District of Maine from 1861 to 1882.
Federal Judicial Service
On February 10, 1882, Webb was nominated by President Chester A. Arthur to a seat on the United States District Court for the District of Maine vacated by Judge Edward Fox. He was confirmed by the United States Senate on February 21, 1882, and received his commission on February 22, 1882. He served until his death on December 27, 1902, in Portland.
Legacy
Webb is remembered for his long tenure on the federal bench in Maine. His rulings covered a variety of maritime and commercial law issues relevant to the state's economy and geography.
