Scott (crater)

Scott is a lunar impact crater that lies near the south pole of the Moon. It is located between the large crater Amundsen to the west and the enormous walled plain Shackleton to the east. Due to its proximity to the lunar south pole, Scott's interior receives very little sunlight, and portions of it are likely in permanent shadow.

The rim of Scott is heavily eroded and irregular, with several smaller craters along its edge. The most notable of these is the small crater Biscoe, which lies across the northwestern rim. The interior floor of Scott is relatively flat and featureless, with only a few small craterlets. Due to its location and perpetual darkness in some areas, Scott is of interest to scientists studying the potential for water ice deposits on the Moon. The crater's features are difficult to observe directly from Earth due to its location and the foreshortening effect. Data from lunar orbiters and probes has been essential for mapping and understanding the characteristics of Scott.
