The parish is bordered by France to the north and east, and by the Andorran parishes of Encamp to the south, and Ordino to the west. Its elevation ranges from around 1,500 meters to over 2,900 meters. As of recent population censuses, Canillo has a relatively small population compared to other parishes, with a significant portion of its residents living in the main town of Canillo. Other villages and settlements within the parish include Soldeu, El Tarter, Incles, Ransol, Bordes d'Envalira, Meritxell, Els Plans, and Prats.

Tourism is a major component of Canillo's economy, particularly winter sports tourism. The Grandvalira ski resort, one of the largest in the Pyrenees, encompasses areas within Canillo, most notably Soldeu and El Tarter. In addition to skiing and snowboarding, Canillo offers opportunities for hiking, mountain biking, and other outdoor activities during the summer months. Other economic activities include agriculture and services.
Culture and Landmarks:
Canillo is home to several cultural and historical landmarks. The Sanctuary of Meritxell, dedicated to Andorra's patron saint, Our Lady of Meritxell, is located within the parish. The Romanesque church of Sant Joan de Caselles, notable for its architecture and frescoes, is also a significant site. Furthermore, the Palau de Gel (Ice Palace) offers a variety of ice-related activities and sports facilities.
Governance:
Like other Andorran parishes, Canillo is governed by a Comú (parish council). The Comú is responsible for local administration, public services, and representing the interests of the parish's residents.
