Bangladesh Premier League (football)
The Bangladesh Premier League (BPL), also known as the TVS Bangladesh Premier League for sponsorship reasons, is the top-tier professional football league in Bangladesh. It is administered by the Bangladesh Football Federation (BFF).
The league was established in 2007 as the successor to the National Football Championship, aiming to professionalize the sport in the country. The inaugural season featured 11 teams.
The BPL generally operates on a round-robin format, where teams play each other twice, once at home and once away. At the end of the season, the team with the most points is crowned champion. The team finishing at the bottom of the league is typically relegated to the Bangladesh Championship League, the second tier of Bangladeshi football. Promotion and relegation rules can vary based on decisions made by the BFF.
The league season typically runs from late in the year to the following year. Participating teams are a mix of clubs based in Dhaka and other major cities throughout Bangladesh. The champion team often qualifies for continental club competitions, such as the AFC Cup.
The BPL has contributed to the development of football in Bangladesh by providing a platform for local players to showcase their talent and for foreign players to contribute their experience. The league aims to improve the standard of play, increase fan engagement, and ultimately help the Bangladesh national football team achieve greater success on the international stage.
Notable clubs that have participated in the BPL include Abahani Limited Dhaka, Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club, Dhaka Mohammedan, and Bashundhara Kings. Bashundhara Kings are one of the most successful and dominant teams in the league's recent history.
