Blanket Bay (Otago Harbour)
Blanket Bay is a small bay located on the Otago Harbour in the South Island of New Zealand. It is situated on the southern shore of the harbour, approximately halfway between Port Chalmers and Dunedin city. Characterized by its sheltered position and sandy beach, Blanket Bay offers a tranquil recreational area.
Historically, Blanket Bay served as a landing point for early settlers and a site for small-scale boatbuilding. Its name likely originates from its perceived shape or sheltered nature, providing a sense of covering or protection, similar to a blanket.
Today, Blanket Bay is primarily used for recreational activities such as swimming, kayaking, and picnicking. It is also a popular spot for viewing the diverse birdlife that inhabits the Otago Harbour. The area surrounding the bay is largely residential, with some light industry and commercial activity further along the harbor coastline.
