United Nations General Assembly Resolution 3010 (XXVII)

United Nations General Assembly Resolution 3010 (XXVII), adopted on 18 December 1972, proclaimed the week beginning 25 May of each year as "Week of Solidarity with the Colonial Peoples of Southern Africa Fighting for Freedom, Independence and Equal Rights". The resolution aimed to highlight the struggle of people in Southern Africa against colonialism, apartheid, and racial discrimination.

The resolution stemmed from ongoing concerns within the international community regarding the human rights situation in Southern Africa, particularly in territories controlled by Portugal (Angola, Mozambique, Guinea-Bissau), and the system of apartheid in South Africa. It built upon previous UN resolutions and declarations addressing decolonization and racial equality.

By designating a specific week for solidarity, the UN intended to encourage governments, organizations, and individuals to express their support for the liberation movements and to take action against the regimes perpetuating colonial rule and racial discrimination. The week typically involved public rallies, demonstrations, educational events, and fundraising activities. It served as a focal point for raising awareness and mobilizing international opinion against the injustices prevalent in Southern Africa.

The adoption of Resolution 3010 (XXVII) reflected the increasing pressure on colonial powers and the apartheid regime, and the growing support for self-determination and human rights within the international community. The annual observance of the Week of Solidarity continued until the end of apartheid in South Africa and the independence of former Portuguese colonies, signifying the eventual achievement of the resolution's aims.
