White Stag (clothing)
White Stag was a brand of women's clothing, originally known for its skiwear. The company traces its origins back to 1905 when Max Baar and his sons established the Portland Manufacturing Company in Portland, Oregon. Initially, the company focused on producing canvas goods like tents and wagon covers.
The transition to apparel occurred gradually. During the Great Depression, the company started making inexpensive, durable clothing, utilizing canvas and other readily available materials. It wasn't until the late 1930s that the company began specializing in ski apparel.
The "White Stag" name was adopted in the 1930s, referencing a local legend of a white stag seen in the Oregon wilderness. This branding proved successful and helped establish the brand's association with outdoor adventure and quality.
Over the years, White Stag expanded beyond skiwear to include a broader range of women's casual and activewear. The brand became known for offering affordable and practical clothing, often found in department stores and larger retail chains.
In the late 20th and early 21st centuries, White Stag went through several ownership changes. Ultimately, the brand was acquired by Walmart. Today, White Stag continues as a private label brand sold exclusively in Walmart stores, focusing primarily on value-priced women's apparel. The modern White Stag offers a wide selection of clothing items, including basics, seasonal fashions, and plus-size options.
