Encana

Encana was a Canadian energy company focused on natural gas production and oil sands operations. Founded in 2002 through a spin-off of PanCanadian Energy Corporation, Encana was headquartered in Calgary, Alberta. It was one of the largest natural gas producers in North America for many years.

In 2020, Encana underwent a significant corporate restructuring and rebranding. The company shifted its focus to oil production, particularly in the Permian Basin in the United States, and changed its name to Ovintiv Inc. This transformation marked a strategic shift away from its historical emphasis on Canadian natural gas assets. The corporate headquarters were also relocated to Denver, Colorado.

The name "Encana" itself was a portmanteau of "En" from Energy and "Canada," reflecting its Canadian origins and primary focus at its inception. The company was traded on both the Toronto Stock Exchange (TSX) and the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) under the ticker ECA prior to its rebranding. The company's history included acquisitions and divestitures of various energy assets, influencing its corporate strategy and market position over time. Following the name change to Ovintiv, the company's symbol also changed on both exchanges.
