Shampoo (film)
Shampoo is a 1975 American satirical romantic comedy-drama film directed by Hal Ashby, and starring Warren Beatty, Julie Christie, Goldie Hawn, and Lee Grant. Beatty co-wrote the screenplay with Robert Towne.
The film is set in Beverly Hills, California, on the day before and the day of the 1968 United States presidential election. It follows George Roundy (Beatty), a talented but womanizing hairdresser, as he juggles relationships with several women, including his current girlfriend Jill (Hawn), his former girlfriend Jackie (Christie), and Felicia (Grant), the wife of a wealthy and powerful businessman, Lester (Jack Warden), who is also involved with Jackie.
Shampoo explores themes of sexual liberation, social hypocrisy, and the changing political landscape of the late 1960s. The film's title is a play on words, referencing both George's profession and the superficiality and artificiality of the characters' lives. The film received mixed reviews upon its release but has since gained critical acclaim for its sharp wit, strong performances, and insightful commentary on American society. It was nominated for several Academy Awards, including Best Original Screenplay (winning the award), Best Supporting Actress (Lee Grant won), Best Supporting Actor (Jack Warden nominated), and Best Actor (Warren Beatty nominated).
