Chuzi II

Chuzi II (pronounced Choo-tzee the Second) was the Xiongnu Chanyu (ruler) who reigned from 18 BCE to 13 BCE. He was the son of Huhanye and the grandson of Xulüquanqu. His personal name is unknown.

As Chanyu, Chuzi II inherited a Xiongnu state somewhat weakened and integrated into the Han Dynasty's tribute system. His rule continued the policy of peace and alliance with the Han Dynasty, which had been established by his father Huhanye. This involved sending hostages to the Han court and receiving gifts and support in return.

However, internal divisions and tensions persisted within the Xiongnu. Some Xiongnu leaders opposed the policy of submission to the Han and advocated for a return to the earlier, more aggressive stance. Chuzi II faced the challenge of balancing these opposing factions while maintaining peace with the Han Dynasty.

Ultimately, Chuzi II's reign was relatively short and uneventful in terms of major conflicts. He was succeeded by his brother, Wuzhuliu Ruodi, after his death in 13 BCE. His reign is primarily significant as a continuation of the pro-Han policy established by his father and a reflection of the ongoing efforts to manage the relationship between the Xiongnu and the Han Dynasty during this period.
