Jungers
Jungers refers primarily to the Jungers Lock and Dam, a navigable lock and dam located on the Upper Mississippi River near East Dubuque, Illinois. The structure is part of the 1930s-era Upper Mississippi River 9-Foot Channel Project, designed to improve navigation on the river.
The Jungers Lock and Dam, designated as Lock and Dam No. 11, plays a crucial role in maintaining a stable water depth for commercial barge traffic and recreational boating on the Mississippi River. The lock allows vessels to bypass the dam, while the dam itself creates a pool of water that ensures adequate draft for navigation.
Beyond its functional role in navigation, the Jungers area also provides habitat for a variety of fish and wildlife, and offers recreational opportunities such as fishing, boating, and bird watching. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is responsible for operating and maintaining the lock and dam. The name "Jungers" may also infrequently refer to geographic features or entities associated with the immediate vicinity of the lock and dam.
