Holiday (Madonna song)

"Holiday" is a song recorded by American singer Madonna for her eponymous debut studio album, Madonna (1983). It was released as the album's third single on September 7, 1983, by Sire Records. Written by Curtis Hudson and Lisa Stevens of Pure Energy, the song was offered to Madonna by her producer John "Jellybean" Benitez after he was approached by the songwriters. Madonna liked the song and included it on her debut album.

"Holiday" is an upbeat dance-pop track that features instrumentation from bass guitar, electronic drums, guitars, handclaps and synthesizers. The song’s lyrics speak of the universal desire to take a holiday and celebrate.

Upon its release, "Holiday" became Madonna's first top-ten hit in several countries, including Australia, Belgium, Germany, Ireland, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom. In the United States, it peaked at number 16 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. The song has since been certified gold by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) for sales of over 500,000 copies.

"Holiday" has been included on nearly all of Madonna's compilation albums, including The Immaculate Collection (1990), GHV2 (2001), and Celebration (2009). It is considered one of Madonna's signature songs and has been performed on almost all of her concert tours. Its enduring popularity and positive message have solidified its place in pop culture.
