Samuel Butcher (bishop)

Samuel Butcher (1811-1876) was an Irish Anglican clergyman who served as the Bishop of Meath from 1866 until his death.

Born in Dublin, he was educated at Trinity College Dublin, graduating with honors. He was elected a Fellow of Trinity College in 1836 and later served as Professor of Biblical Greek from 1850 to 1852 and Regius Professor of Divinity from 1852 to 1866.

Butcher was known for his scholarship, particularly in the field of biblical studies. He was also a prominent figure in the Church of Ireland, advocating for reforms and improvements in theological education. His appointment as Bishop of Meath reflected his standing within the church.

As Bishop of Meath, he oversaw the diocese during a period of significant change following the disestablishment of the Church of Ireland in 1869. He worked to reorganize the diocese and maintain its financial stability in the wake of disestablishment. He also played a role in the broader debates within the Church of Ireland regarding its future and identity.

Butcher was married to Mary Leahy, and they had several children. He died in 1876 and is remembered as a respected scholar and church leader during a critical period in the history of the Church of Ireland. His theological perspectives were considered moderately conservative within the spectrum of the Church of Ireland at the time.
