Charleroi (Walloon Parliament constituency)
The Charleroi constituency is one of the eleven constituencies used to elect members of the Walloon Parliament in Belgium. It corresponds to the administrative arrondissement of Charleroi and encompasses the following municipalities: Aiseau-Presles, Chapelle-lez-Herlaimont, Charleroi, Châtelet, Courcelles, Farciennes, Fleurus, Fontaine-l'Évêque, Gerpinnes, Les Bons Villers, Pont-à-Celles, and Seneffe.
The constituency currently elects 14 members to the Walloon Parliament using the D'Hondt method of proportional representation. The specific number of seats allocated can fluctuate slightly between elections depending on population changes.
The political landscape of the Charleroi constituency traditionally leans towards the left, with the Socialist Party (PS) frequently holding a significant share of the vote and seats. However, other parties such as the Reformist Movement (MR), Ecolo, and the Workers' Party of Belgium (PTB) also maintain a presence and compete for representation. The constituency's socio-economic context, including its industrial heritage and related challenges, often shapes the political debates and priorities of its elected representatives. Results from elections in the Charleroi constituency are often viewed as an indicator of broader political trends in the Walloon region.
