Aarhus (river)

The Aarhus River (Danish: Aarhus Å) is a river in eastern Jutland, Denmark, that runs through the city of Aarhus. It originates at the lake of Brabrand Sø, west of Aarhus, and flows approximately 40 kilometers (25 miles) eastward to its mouth in Aarhus Harbour and the Bay of Aarhus.

The river's course has been significantly altered over time, particularly within the city of Aarhus. Historically, it was channeled and partly culverted, especially during the 20th century, to accommodate urban development and reduce flooding.

In the late 20th and early 21st centuries, efforts were undertaken to restore sections of the river to a more natural state. This involved uncovering culverted sections, creating wider riverbeds, and establishing riparian zones to improve water quality and biodiversity, as well as to enhance recreational opportunities in the city center.

The Aarhus River is an important element of the city's landscape and provides habitat for various species of fish, birds, and other wildlife. It also serves as a popular area for walking, cycling, and boating. The restored sections of the river have become a significant feature of Aarhus' urban environment and are considered a successful example of urban ecological restoration.
