Al-Hariqa

Al-Hariqa (Arabic: الحريقة, meaning "the fire" or "the burning") refers to a devastating pogrom that took place in Casablanca, Morocco, in 1941. It was a violent attack against the Jewish community of the city, fueled by antisemitism and influenced by the political climate of Vichy France, which then controlled Morocco.

The pogrom began on November 8, 1941, and lasted for two days. Moroccan rioters, incited by anti-Jewish propaganda, attacked Jewish homes, businesses, and synagogues. Jewish people were assaulted, and significant damage and looting occurred. The exact number of casualties is debated, but sources generally indicate dozens of deaths and numerous injuries. Many Jewish families were left homeless and destitute.

The events of Al-Hariqa are considered a significant and tragic event in the history of the Jewish community in Morocco. It highlighted the vulnerability of the community during a period of increased antisemitism and foreign influence. While the Moroccan monarchy later offered compensation to the victims, the event left a lasting scar and contributed to the subsequent emigration of many Moroccan Jews in the following decades. It serves as a reminder of the dangers of unchecked prejudice and the importance of protecting minority rights.
