James Tait (architect)

James Tait (1876-1953) was a Scottish architect known primarily for his work in the interwar period. He was a prominent figure in the modernist architectural movement in Scotland and designed numerous public buildings, housing schemes, and private residences.

Born in Glasgow, Tait trained at the Glasgow School of Architecture. He joined the architectural practice of Burnet, Son & Campbell, eventually becoming a partner. After World War I, he established his own independent practice.

Tait's designs often incorporated elements of Art Deco and International Style architecture. He favored clean lines, functional layouts, and the use of modern materials such as reinforced concrete. He also demonstrated a sensitivity to the Scottish landscape and vernacular architecture, often adapting modern forms to suit the local context.

Notable works include housing developments in Glasgow and Edinburgh, various municipal buildings, and the India Buildings in Glasgow (in collaboration). His work contributed significantly to the development of modern architecture in Scotland and helped to shape the built environment of the 20th century. He also served on various architectural committees and contributed to architectural discourse through publications and lectures.
