Baredi

Baredi refers to a Sunni Islamic movement that originated in Bareilly, India, in the late 19th century. It is characterized by its strong devotion to the Prophet Muhammad, reverence for Sufi saints, and emphasis on traditional Islamic practices.

The movement was founded by Ahmed Raza Khan Barelvi (1856-1921), a prominent Islamic scholar who sought to defend traditional Sunni beliefs and practices against what he perceived as heretical innovations and deviations from Islamic orthodoxy. Key to his teachings was the concept of Nur-i-Muhammadi, the divine light of Muhammad, which he believed was manifested in all creation.

Baredis emphasize tawassul (seeking intercession through the Prophet and saints), celebrate the Prophet's birthday (Mawlid) with great enthusiasm, and hold urs (death anniversaries) of Sufi saints. They are known for their strict adherence to the Hanafi school of Islamic jurisprudence and their strong opposition to Wahhabism and Deobandism, movements they consider to be undermining traditional Sunni beliefs.

Baredi beliefs and practices have spread beyond India, particularly to Pakistan, Bangladesh, and the United Kingdom. They maintain a significant following in these regions and continue to promote their interpretation of Sunni Islam through mosques, madrasas, and publications. Despite facing criticism from some other Islamic groups, the Baredi movement remains a significant and influential force within the global Sunni Muslim community.
