George Green (Medal of Honor)
George Green was a United States Marine Corps private who received the Medal of Honor for his actions during the Battle of Iwo Jima in World War II.
Born on February 7, 1925, in Concord, New Hampshire, Green enlisted in the Marine Corps.
On March 3, 1945, during the assault on enemy Japanese positions on Iwo Jima, Private Green distinguished himself by conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity. When his platoon was pinned down by a barrage of Japanese machine gun fire, Green, acting on his own initiative, advanced alone toward the enemy positions. He fearlessly charged through the intense fire, silenced one machine gun with his rifle, and then destroyed another with grenades. His heroic actions enabled his platoon to continue its advance.
Green was awarded the Medal of Honor for his extraordinary heroism. The medal was presented to him by President Harry S. Truman at the White House on October 12, 1945.
After the war, Green returned to civilian life. He died on October 19, 1996, and is buried at Arlington National Cemetery.
