Cornelius O'Brien (bishop)
Cornelius O'Brien (1843-1906) was a Roman Catholic Archbishop of Halifax, Nova Scotia. Born in New Glasgow, Prince Edward Island, he was educated at St. Dunstan's College and the Propaganda College in Rome. He was ordained a priest in 1867.
After serving as a professor and administrator at St. Dunstan's, O'Brien was appointed Archbishop of Halifax in 1882. He was known for his strong advocacy of Catholic education, establishing numerous schools and institutions throughout his archdiocese. He also played a significant role in the development of Catholic social teaching in Canada, particularly concerning labor issues.
O'Brien was considered a skilled orator and writer. He authored several books and articles on religious and philosophical topics. He died in Halifax in 1906 and is buried in Holy Cross Cemetery. His episcopate witnessed significant growth and consolidation of the Catholic Church in Nova Scotia.
