Battle of Carthage (238)

The Battle of Carthage in 238 AD took place during the Year of the Six Emperors in the Roman Empire. Following the assassination of Emperor Alexander Severus, the unpopular Maximinus Thrax ascended to the throne. His heavy taxation and harsh policies led to widespread discontent, particularly in the province of Africa Proconsularis.

A rebellion erupted in Thysdrus (modern El Djem, Tunisia), where Gordian I, the proconsul, and his son Gordian II were proclaimed emperors. The revolt gained momentum quickly. Capelianus, the governor of Numidia and a loyal supporter of Maximinus Thrax, opposed Gordian I and II. Capelianus commanded a legion composed of veteran soldiers, Legio III Augusta, along with auxiliary troops.

Gordian II led a hastily assembled and poorly trained force against Capelianus near Carthage. The precise details of the battle are scarce, but Capelianus's experienced troops decisively defeated Gordian II's forces. Gordian II was killed in the fighting. Upon hearing of his son's death, Gordian I committed suicide in Carthage.

The failure of the rebellion at Carthage allowed Maximinus Thrax to retain control, albeit temporarily. The deaths of the Gordians did not end the unrest. The Roman Senate continued the rebellion, eventually leading to the fall of Maximinus Thrax later in 238 AD.
