Altay (tank)

The Altay is a Turkish main battle tank (MBT) currently under development and production by BMC. It is named after Army General Fahrettin Altay, who commanded the V Corps during the Turkish War of Independence.

The Altay program was initiated in the mid-2000s to develop an indigenous MBT capable of meeting the requirements of the Turkish Armed Forces. The program involved technology transfer and design assistance from South Korean company Hyundai Rotem, which had previously developed the K2 Black Panther MBT.

Key features of the Altay include:

  • Armament: A 120 mm smoothbore gun as its primary weapon. It is also equipped with a coaxial machine gun and a remote weapon station.

  • Protection: Modular armor, including composite and reactive armor, designed to offer a high level of protection against various threats, including anti-tank guided missiles (ATGMs) and kinetic energy penetrators.

  • Mobility: A powerful engine and advanced suspension system for high mobility on varied terrain. The engine has been subject to change and localization efforts.

  • Fire Control System: A sophisticated fire control system for accurate target engagement in day and night conditions.

The Altay tank program has faced various delays, including issues related to engine procurement and technology transfer. As of 2024, initial deliveries of the Altay tank have commenced to the Turkish Armed Forces.

The Altay is intended to replace older tanks in the Turkish Armed Forces' inventory and enhance the country's military capabilities. Further development and upgrades are planned for the Altay platform, including enhancements to its armor, fire control system, and other key features.
