Spud (game)

Spud is a children's outdoor game of tag with elimination elements, typically played with a large group of players and a ball (usually a rubber or foam ball).

Gameplay:

The game begins with all players standing in a designated area. One player is chosen to be "it" or the "thrower." The thrower calls out a player's name, then throws the ball straight up into the air. While the ball is in the air, all other players must run away from the designated starting area.

The named player must catch the ball as quickly as possible. Once they have the ball, they yell "SPUD!" This signals all other players to freeze in place. The player with the ball can then take up to three steps (or hops, depending on the agreed-upon rules) in any direction to get closer to another player.

The player with the ball then attempts to hit another player with the ball below the knees. If the thrower hits the target player below the knees, the target player receives a letter. The first time, they get an "S," the second time a "P," and so on, spelling out "SPUD." If the thrower misses or hits the target player above the knees, the thrower receives the letter instead.

Players who have spelled out "SPUD" are eliminated from the game. The game continues until only one player remains who has not spelled out "SPUD." That player is the winner.

Variations:

Many variations exist concerning the number of steps allowed, the specific body part that must be hit, and how the "thrower" is chosen for each round. Some variations involve adding obstacles or designated safe zones. Some versions require the target area to be below the waist, not just below the knees. The letter a player receives upon being hit may also differ, using words other than SPUD for elimination.
