Sassandra

Sassandra is a coastal city in southwestern Côte d'Ivoire, located at the mouth of the Sassandra River on the Gulf of Guinea. It is a sub-prefecture of the Sassandra Department and a commune in the Gbôklé Region.

Historically, Sassandra served as an important trading post during the colonial era, particularly for timber, coffee, and cocoa. It was initially settled by the indigenous Krus and later came under French colonial rule. The city’s economy is largely based on agriculture, fishing, and tourism.

Sassandra is known for its beaches, including those near the lighthouse (Phare de Sassandra). The town offers a glimpse into Côte d'Ivoire's colonial past, with some remnants of French architecture still visible. The Sassandra River is also an important feature of the landscape.

The population of Sassandra is relatively small compared to other major cities in Côte d'Ivoire. Infrastructure development has been ongoing, but access to services can be limited.
