The Cougar (newspaper)

The Cougar is the official student newspaper of the University of Houston. It is published on Mondays and Thursdays during the fall and spring semesters, and weekly during the summer. The newspaper is student-run and covers news, sports, arts and life, and opinion related to the University of Houston community.

The paper traces its origins back to 1927, though it has undergone several name changes and periods of inactivity. "The Cougar" became the official name in the 1950s. The paper is funded through advertising revenue and student service fees. It operates independently from the university administration in terms of editorial content.

The Cougar provides students with opportunities to gain experience in journalism, photography, graphic design, and advertising sales. Many alumni of The Cougar have gone on to careers in professional journalism and related fields. The newspaper maintains a website where its content is also published.
