Fred Wright (cartoonist)

Fred Wright (1907-1984) was a British political cartoonist and artist. He was best known for his work in the British communist newspaper, the Daily Worker (later the Morning Star), from 1940 until his death.

Wright's cartoons were characterized by their bold, clear lines, their strong socialist message, and their often humorous depiction of political figures and social issues. He frequently addressed themes of class struggle, anti-imperialism, and the fight for peace. He was a committed communist and his artwork reflected his political beliefs.

Born in London, Wright trained as an engineering draughtsman before becoming a full-time artist. He was a self-taught cartoonist. His style was influenced by earlier political cartoonists like Will Dyson.

Beyond his work in the Daily Worker, Wright also contributed to other publications and produced illustrations for books and pamphlets. He was a member of the Communist Party of Great Britain and remained actively involved in left-wing politics throughout his life. His legacy lies in his decades of impactful and unwavering contribution to socialist visual art in Britain.
