Mongmao

Mongmao refers to a historical Tai polity located in the region of modern-day Dehong Prefecture, Yunnan Province, China, and extending into parts of present-day Myanmar (Burma). It was a significant Tai kingdom, often considered one of the most powerful among the Tai polities of the Shan States.

History:

Mongmao played a crucial role in the history of the Tai peoples. It rose to prominence in the 14th and 15th centuries, establishing itself as a dominant force in the region. The kingdom was involved in frequent conflicts with its neighbors, including the Ming Dynasty of China and other Tai polities. The Mongmao rulers, known as Saophas or Chao Fas, asserted their authority over a diverse population, including Tai, Jingpo, and other ethnic groups.

The kingdom's power waned over time due to internal strife, external pressures, and the rise of other Tai states such as Kengtung and Chiang Mai. Eventually, Mongmao was absorbed into neighboring polities and incorporated into the expanding territories of both China and Burma.
