CO2 (opera)

CO2 is a 2015 chamber opera in one act composed by Giorgio Battistelli, with a libretto by Ian Burton. Commissioned by Teatro alla Scala, it premiered on May 20, 2015, at the Piccolo Teatro Studio in Milan as part of Expo 2015.

The opera addresses the complex issue of climate change and its impact on the planet. It explores themes of environmental degradation, corporate responsibility, and the potential consequences of inaction. Through a series of scenes, the opera portrays different perspectives on the climate crisis, including those of scientists, politicians, and ordinary people affected by environmental disasters.

The work features a small ensemble of singers and instrumentalists. The vocal roles include characters representing various stakeholders in the climate debate, such as a CEO, a scientist, and climate refugees. The score incorporates a range of musical styles, reflecting the diverse perspectives presented in the libretto. The instrumentation is designed to create a sense of urgency and unease, mirroring the precarious state of the environment.

Reception of CO2 has been mixed. Some critics have praised its ambitious subject matter and Battistelli's innovative use of musical language. Others have found the libretto to be overly didactic and the overall dramatic impact to be lacking. Nevertheless, the opera has been noted for its timely and relevant exploration of one of the most pressing issues facing the world today. The opera has subsequently been performed in other venues.
