Stingaree (serial)
Stingaree was a 1915 Australian silent film serial directed by James Christieson. It consisted of twelve episodes and starred Snowy Baker as Stingaree, an Australian bushranger operating in South Australia during the 1870s.
The serial is based on the Stingaree short story collection written by E.W. Hornung, the creator of A.J. Raffles. The character, while a criminal, is portrayed as a charming rogue with a sense of justice, often assisting those in need.
The serial's episodes followed a self-contained narrative structure, with Stingaree involved in different escapades and helping various people. Though successful at the time of release in Australia, like many silent films, Stingaree is now considered lost. No known copies of the serial survive. Its popularity however led to a 1934 American remake, Stingaree, starring Irene Dunne and Richard Dix.
