VMFA-312
VMFA-312 (Marine Fighter Attack Squadron 312) is a United States Marine Corps fighter attack squadron consisting of McDonnell Douglas F/A-18 Hornets. The squadron, known as the "Checkerboards," is based at Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort, South Carolina and falls under the command of Marine Aircraft Group 31 (MAG-31) and the 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing (2nd MAW).
History
VMFA-312 was originally commissioned as VMF-312 (Marine Fighting Squadron 312) on June 1, 1943, at Page Field, Parris Island, South Carolina. During World War II, the squadron saw extensive combat in the Pacific Theater, participating in campaigns including the Battle of Okinawa. Following the war, VMF-312 served in various capacities, including deployments to Korea during the Korean War. In 1961, the squadron was redesignated VMFA-312, reflecting its transition to a fighter attack role.
Throughout the Cold War, VMFA-312 operated various aircraft, including the F-4 Phantom II, before transitioning to the F/A-18 Hornet. The squadron has participated in numerous deployments and exercises around the world, supporting Marine Corps operations and maintaining a high state of readiness. VMFA-312 has also been involved in contingency operations, showcasing its ability to rapidly deploy and respond to global crises.
Mission
The mission of VMFA-312 is to conduct offensive air support, armed reconnaissance, and air interdiction, and close air support in support of Marine Air-Ground Task Force operations. The squadron also provides air defense for Marine Corps units and installations.
Nickname
The squadron's official nickname is the "Checkerboards," which is reflected in the distinctive black and white checkerboard pattern on the tail of their aircraft.
