Pehlivan

Pehlivan (پهلوان) is a Turkish word derived from the Persian word pahlavan, meaning "hero" or "champion." It primarily refers to a wrestler participating in traditional Turkish oil wrestling (Yağlı Güreş).

In the context of Yağlı Güreş, a Pehlivan is an athlete who competes in bouts where wrestlers are covered in olive oil, making them incredibly slippery and requiring immense strength, technique, and endurance. Becoming a Pehlivan is a long and arduous process, involving years of dedicated training and adherence to specific traditions and customs.

Beyond wrestling, "Pehlivan" can also be used in a broader sense to denote a strong, courageous, and honorable person within Turkish culture. This usage reflects the historical significance of wrestling in Turkish society, where Pehlivans were often revered as national heroes and symbols of strength.

The title of "Başpehlivan" is awarded to the winner of the annual Kırkpınar Oil Wrestling festival, Turkey's oldest and most prestigious sporting event. The Başpehlivan is considered the champion of all Pehlivans for that year.
