Geography and Route:
The pass road begins in Ulrichen in the Valais and climbs steeply through a rocky landscape. The northern ramp features several hairpin turns. On the Ticino side, the road descends towards Airolo, passing through the Val Bedretto. The landscape on this side is characterized by pastures and more gentle slopes.
History:
Construction of the Nufenen Pass road began in 1960 and it was opened to traffic in 1969. It was built primarily to improve regional connectivity and support tourism.
Tourism and Recreation:
The Nufenen Pass is a popular destination for cyclists, motorcyclists, and drivers seeking scenic alpine routes. The summit offers panoramic views of the surrounding mountains, including the Gries Glacier and the Bernese Alps. Hiking trails are also accessible from the pass.
Seasonal Considerations:
The Nufenen Pass is typically open from late May or early June to October or November, depending on snow conditions. Winter closures are common due to heavy snowfall. Before traveling, it is advisable to check current road conditions.
