Trisk (Hasidic dynasty)

The Trisk dynasty is a branch of Hasidic Judaism, originating in the town of Trisk (Turiysk) in Volhynia (present-day Ukraine). It was founded by Rabbi Avraham Twersky (1806-1889), the son of Rabbi Mordechai Twersky of Chernobyl, who was himself a prominent disciple of the Baal Shem Tov. As a descendant of the Chernobyl dynasty, the Trisk Rebbes followed a similar style of leadership and approach to Hasidism.

Rabbi Avraham Twersky established his court in Trisk and attracted a large following. He was known for his piety, scholarship, and strong personality. After his death, his son Rabbi Mordechai Twersky (d. 1936) succeeded him as Rebbe.

The Trisk dynasty was largely destroyed during the Holocaust. Few members of the family and their followers survived. Post-World War II, attempts were made to revive the dynasty in America. Descendants of the Trisk Rebbes continue to exist, though the dynasty does not currently have a large active following.

The teachings and traditions of Trisk Hasidism are preserved in various writings and passed down through generations of descendants and those connected to the dynasty. These teachings often emphasize prayer, devotion, and the importance of connecting to a Rebbe. Like other Chernobyl branches, the Trisk dynasty experienced periods of internal division and shifts in leadership throughout its history.
