Socialist Party (Portugal)
The Socialist Party (Portuguese: Partido Socialista, PS) is a centre-left political party in Portugal. It is one of the two major parties in Portuguese politics, alongside the Social Democratic Party (PSD). The party's ideology is based on democratic socialism and social democracy.
Founded in 1973 in Bad Münstereifel, West Germany, during the final years of the Estado Novo dictatorship, the PS was initially led by Mário Soares. He became the first Prime Minister of Portugal after the Carnation Revolution in 1974, which overthrew the dictatorship.
The Socialist Party advocates for a mixed economy, social justice, and a strong welfare state. Its platform typically includes policies aimed at reducing inequality, improving access to healthcare and education, and promoting sustainable development. The party is a member of the Socialist International and the Party of European Socialists.
Throughout its history, the PS has been in government for significant periods, often in coalition with other parties. Notable Socialist Prime Ministers include Mário Soares, António Guterres, José Sócrates, and António Costa. António Costa served as Prime Minister from 2015 to 2024, initially leading a minority government supported by left-wing parties, and later a majority government. The PS experienced a significant shift in 2024, with Luís Montenegro of the PSD becoming Prime Minister, though the PS remains a major force in Portuguese politics.
