Quality Street (1937 film)

Quality Street is a 1937 American historical romantic comedy film directed by George Stevens and starring Katharine Hepburn and Franchot Tone. It is based on the 1901 play of the same name by J. M. Barrie.

The film is set in early 19th-century England during the Napoleonic Wars. It tells the story of Phoebe Throssel (Hepburn), a charming schoolteacher in Quality Street, a fictional street in a quaint English town. Phoebe is secretly in love with Dr. Valentine Brown (Tone), who goes off to war, leaving Phoebe heartbroken. Years later, he returns, but Phoebe, believing herself to have aged and lost her attractiveness, creates a fictional younger niece, Miss Livvy, to try and recapture his attention. The deception leads to humorous complications and eventually, the revelation of Phoebe's true feelings.

The film is known for its lavish costumes, picturesque settings, and the performances of its lead actors. While considered a well-made adaptation of Barrie's play, it was not a major box office success and is not as widely remembered as some of Stevens' other films. It remains, however, a notable example of the romantic comedies produced by Hollywood during the Golden Age of cinema. The film's plot explores themes of love, loss, aging, and the societal pressures placed upon women during the period.
