Canek (chiefdom)

Canek was the name associated with the ruling lineage and chiefdom of the Itza Maya polity centered at Tayasal (modern-day Flores, Guatemala) during the Postclassic period. More broadly, "Canek" could refer to a title or position of rulership within the Itza political structure.

The Canek lineage rose to prominence after the abandonment of Chichen Itza in the Terminal Classic period. They later migrated to the Petén region, establishing their capital at Tayasal on an island in Lake Petén Itza.

The Canek rulers maintained a degree of independence from other Maya polities and later from the Spanish colonial authorities for a considerable period. They resisted Spanish incursions and maintained their traditional beliefs and social structure.

Notable Caneks include Ah Xupan Canek, who resisted Spanish attempts at conversion in the late 17th century, and whose name is associated with the final conquest of Tayasal in 1697 by Martín de Ursúa y Arizmendi. The fall of Tayasal marked the last independent Maya kingdom to be conquered by the Spanish.

The legacy of the Canek lineage remains significant in Maya history, representing a period of resilience and resistance against external pressures. Their story provides insights into the political and social dynamics of the Postclassic Maya world.
