NGC 5713

NGC 5713 is a spiral galaxy located approximately 75 million light-years away in the constellation Virgo. It is classified as a SA(rs)bc galaxy, indicating a spiral galaxy with a weakly-defined ring structure (rs) and loosely wound spiral arms (bc).

NGC 5713 is notable for its highly distorted and asymmetric appearance. This distortion is believed to be the result of gravitational interaction with a nearby galaxy, likely NGC 5719. The gravitational forces from this interaction have warped the galaxy's disk, pulled out tidal tails, and triggered bursts of star formation.

The galaxy is a member of the Virgo Cluster, a large cluster of galaxies that is part of the larger Virgo Supercluster, to which our own Local Group (including the Milky Way) belongs. As such, NGC 5713 is subject to the various environmental influences present within the cluster, such as ram-pressure stripping and harassment by other galaxies.

Observations across the electromagnetic spectrum, including optical, infrared, and radio wavelengths, have been used to study the structure, star formation activity, and gas content of NGC 5713. These studies help astronomers understand the processes that shape and evolve galaxies in dense environments like galaxy clusters.
