VMFA-323

VMFA-323, also known as the "Death Rattlers," is a United States Marine Corps fighter attack squadron. The squadron flies the F/A-18C Hornet. It is based at Marine Corps Air Station Miramar, California and falls under the command of Marine Aircraft Group 11 (MAG-11) and the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing (3rd MAW).

The squadron's history dates back to World War II, being initially commissioned as VMF-323. During the war, they participated in the Battle of Okinawa. The squadron earned its "Death Rattlers" nickname due to its aggressive tactics and the distinctive rattlesnake insignia adopted during that period.

Following World War II, the squadron transitioned through various aircraft and roles, including deployments during the Korean War and throughout the Cold War period. They were re-designated as VMFA-323 (Marine Fighter Attack Squadron 323) with the introduction of fighter-attack aircraft capable of both air-to-air and air-to-ground missions.

In recent decades, VMFA-323 has participated in numerous operations, including Operation Desert Storm, Operation Iraqi Freedom, and Operation Enduring Freedom. The squadron continues to deploy globally as part of Marine Corps expeditionary forces, providing air support, close air support, and air interdiction capabilities.

The squadron's insignia, featuring a stylized rattlesnake, is a recognizable symbol within the Marine Corps aviation community, representing the unit's history and combat legacy. VMFA-323 maintains a high state of readiness to support Marine Corps objectives worldwide.
