Meremere

A meremere (also sometimes spelled mere mere) is a traditional Māori short, broad, and flat club-like weapon. It is typically made from pounamu (greenstone jade), but can also be made from other materials such as whalebone (then known as a mere parāoa), basalt, or wood.

The meremere is considered a symbol of chiefly authority and status (mana). It was used primarily for close-quarters combat, with a stabbing or thrusting motion aimed at the temple, jaw, or ribs. The shape allowed for quick and decisive strikes.

The process of crafting a pounamu meremere was lengthy and laborious, often taking years using traditional stone-age methods. This contributed to their value and prestige.

The meremere's design is characterized by its broad, flat blade with rounded edges and a handle that usually features a hole for a wrist cord (tau). The blade typically tapers slightly towards the striking edge. The butt of the handle often has a carved design or feature.

The meremere is a significant cultural artifact and is often displayed in museums and cultural centers. While no longer used in warfare, it remains a powerful symbol of Māori identity and heritage.
