NGC 3377

NGC 3377 is an elliptical galaxy located in the constellation Leo. It is a member of the Leo Triplet, a prominent group of galaxies that also includes Messier 65 and Messier 66, although it is not gravitationally bound to the other two.

Characteristics:

NGC 3377 is classified as an E5 galaxy, indicating its flattened elliptical shape. It is relatively small compared to other elliptical galaxies, and exhibits a smooth, featureless appearance. This smoothness suggests that NGC 3377 is relatively old and has undergone significant merging and relaxation, erasing much of its early structure.

The galaxy contains a supermassive black hole at its center, estimated to be around 100 million times the mass of the Sun. The central region also hosts a weak active galactic nucleus (AGN), indicating some level of activity.

Distance and Observation:

NGC 3377 is located approximately 36 million light-years from Earth. It can be observed with a moderate-sized telescope under dark skies, appearing as a faint, diffuse patch of light. While not as visually stunning as the spiral galaxies in the Leo Triplet, its symmetrical shape makes it a worthwhile target for astrophotography.

Membership in the Leo Triplet:

While NGC 3377 appears close to M65 and M66 in the sky, it is considerably further away. Therefore, it is not a gravitationally interacting member of the pair and is considered a foreground object. Its proximity to the other galaxies is a line-of-sight effect.
