Joe Davidson (American football)
Joe Davidson (born September 10, 1951, in Lafayette, Louisiana, died December 3, 2022) was an American football punter who played 11 seasons in the National Football League (NFL) for the Oakland/Los Angeles Raiders (1977-1987) and one season for the Buffalo Bills (1988). He was known for his booming punts and his flamboyant kicking style, often performing a high-leg kick similar to a Rockette.
Davidson played college football at Louisiana State University (LSU). He was drafted by the Denver Broncos in the 11th round of the 1973 NFL Draft but was cut before the season. He spent several years out of the league before joining the Raiders.
With the Raiders, Davidson won two Super Bowls (XV and XVIII). He was a Pro Bowl selection in 1980, 1981, and 1982. His career punting average was 42.3 yards.
After his NFL career, Davidson worked in real estate. He was inducted into the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame in 2000. He died in 2022 from complications of a stroke.
