Flashcard
A flashcard is a learning tool used for memorization through spaced repetition. It typically consists of a card with information on both sides, designed to be reviewed and tested.
Structure and Use:
- Front: Usually presents a question, keyword, concept, or image that needs to be identified or recalled.
- Back: Contains the answer, definition, explanation, or further information related to the front.
The user attempts to recall the information on the back of the card when presented with the front. This active recall process strengthens memory.
Spaced Repetition:
Flashcards are often used in conjunction with spaced repetition systems (SRS). SRS algorithms schedule reviews of cards based on how easily the user recalls the information. Cards that are recalled easily are shown less frequently, while cards that are difficult to recall are shown more frequently. This optimized scheduling improves learning efficiency.
Applications:
Flashcards are used in a wide range of learning domains, including:
- Language learning (vocabulary, grammar)
- Science (definitions, formulas)
- History (dates, events)
- Medicine (anatomy, pharmacology)
- General knowledge (trivia)
Formats:
Flashcards can be physical cards or digital versions accessed through software or websites. Digital flashcards often offer features such as audio pronunciation, image support, and progress tracking.
