Schoenus
Schoenus is a genus of plants in the sedge family, Cyperaceae. These plants are often referred to as bog-rushes, although this name can be misleading as they are not true rushes (Juncaceae).
Schoenus species are typically perennial, rhizomatous herbs, found in a variety of wetland habitats, including bogs, fens, marshes, and wet grasslands. They are characterized by their slender, cylindrical or flattened stems and narrow, grass-like leaves. The inflorescences are typically terminal and composed of spikelets, which are small clusters of flowers subtended by bracts. The fruit is an achene.
The genus Schoenus has a cosmopolitan distribution, with species found on most continents, including Europe, Asia, Africa, Australia, and the Americas. The greatest diversity of species occurs in the Southern Hemisphere, particularly in Australia and South Africa.
Several species of Schoenus are of conservation concern due to habitat loss and degradation. They play important roles in wetland ecosystems, providing habitat and food for various animals, and contributing to nutrient cycling.
