Coxcomb Peak (Colorado)
Coxcomb Peak is a mountain summit in the Elk Mountains range of the Rocky Mountains of North America. The peak is located in Gunnison County, Colorado, approximately 12 miles (19 km) northeast of the town of Crested Butte, within the Raggeds Wilderness area.
The peak is notable for its distinctive, serrated ridgeline, resembling a coxcomb or rooster's comb, from which it derives its name. It is a popular destination for experienced mountaineers and hikers, although access requires navigating challenging terrain and often involves technical climbing skills.
The surrounding area features alpine tundra, coniferous forests, and dramatic glacial features. The peak is part of the watershed of the Crystal River. Due to its high elevation and location within a wilderness area, Coxcomb Peak offers panoramic views of the surrounding Elk Mountains and Gunnison National Forest. The peak's geology is primarily composed of sedimentary rock.
